on the shortness of life

Lately there have been no posts related to shoes, or bags or any related topic. I’m not taking myself very seriously with such a title like “on the shortness of life” but my mood right now it’s contemplatif. I always loved books and reading. Born and lived in the countryside till the age of 14 years except from going to school and helping my parents with their work on the fields there was nothing left to do. So I start reading: first, all the books I found at home. Then I start borrowing them from the school library and during the summer I “borrowed” them from my aunt Lucia. My aunt books were for adults and I think she never knew I was reading them. Or maybe she knew but never said a word about. Sorry and thanks aunt Lucia!

I’ve been always searching for “The Book”. The one will unveil The Truth, who will teach me The Essence of life, who will answer my obsessive question: how to live a good life. Now, mon livre de chevet is Seneca’s essay On The Shortness Of Life. Life is long if you know how to use it.
I have found answers.

“It is not that we have a short time to live, but we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were well invested. But when it is wasted [...] on no good activity, we are forced at last by death’s final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing.”

This is the book who will stay forever with me: on the table, close to my eyes and my heart.

Right now I’m reading: Montaigne. How to Live: Or A Life of Montaigne by Sarah Bakewell which is about to be one of my favourite books ever.

I argued some time ago with my sister Gabi about the last issue of Another Magazine she “borrowed” from me and never come back. I’m obsessed by collecting them and I litteraly hate when this is not respected. Three days ago I received by mail a new magazine entitled Underscore (that I did not know) and an excuse card.

Now I’m fully absorbed and thrilled about this new magazine by the Singapore-based design collective HJGHER. I keep exploring the beautifully designed issue called Fight: philosophy, graphic, photography and writing speaks to my heart. Guess what? I collect it. Thank you Gabi!

The “duty” of taking everyday the dog outside for a walk has good sides: revealed me the neighbourhood in a new light. This autumn we are blessed with sunny weather and in the
morning the light is magnificent.
I made those photographs this morning (except the last one I made two days ago).

what good shall I do this day?

This is my everyday morning question: what good shall I do this day? Generally I ask myself this question in order to get the habit to make at least one good thing for others each day. There are of course hundred tasks to be accomplished everyday and for me this Sunday it was time to make the transition from summer shoes to the autumn ones. Despite the inherent wave of nostalgia which invades me when I devote myself to this type of operation, I’m almost always happy to rediscover
my other shoes. I love to remember when I purchased or received them, in what context, where I
went with…

Those Robert Clergerie are the only new shoes for this autumn. I know, and you know, that they are from a past collection. At the right time the only thing I could afford it was to look at them! I’m happy not only because I got them at a decent price but also because they are very confortable and
of a good manufacturing.

Taking account of my new physical condition, if I don’t want to look ridiculous or to get hurt, this season I only have to admire the Givenchy shoes I got a couple of years ago.

I cherish this pair of four years old Comme des Garçons. A precious gift made with love. The first time in my life I wanted to sleep with shoes on!

A Christmas gift. Comme des Garçons, bought already used few years ago. Who sees them, loves them right away!

autumn love

I spent few days in Siena and surroundings and enjoyed the first days of one of my favourite season contemplating the simple yet sofisticated beauty of the nature.

I wore the same shoes every day.

I photographed representation of the Virgin and Child I saw on the streets.

I smelled the heady perfume of the autumn.
